Which country invented TukTuk?

To reach the correct answer, we must first understand the origins. It turns out that the word “tuk-tuk” is often associated with the small hand-pulled carts known as “rickshaws.” These small vehicles were pulled by a person or an animal in ancient Rome, and they were usually used as combat carts.

The Romans began selling them to other civilizations such as Persia and Egypt, and from there they could have reached Asia. In ancient Asia, there were many conflicts between different kingdoms or empires in China and Japan, so these carts became an excellent tool for fighting and gaining ground. Warriors would ride them with shields and swords, forming large squads capable of covering long distances.

Over time, as we know, Asian cultures began using them not only for war but also for transporting important individuals. Of course, although everyone is important, in those times horses were not widely known or originally from the Asian continent. For that reason, and because cities had great emperors with private entourages, they used specific people to pull the carts that later inspired the tuk-tuk. The pullers did not leave waste everywhere and did not eat as much as large animals, so they had many advantages.

As time passed, wars ended, and the age of machines arrived. Business leaders and rulers still needed to travel constantly, and since Japan and Asia did not yet have vehicles like those in America, they continued using these carts. After the Second World War, minimalism and the boom of industrialization brought engines to everything. Rickshaw pullers were replaced by motors, and this is how the first tuk-tuk was created in Japan.

Japan was the ideal place for this development. With all the postwar industrialization and new factories opening, production of these tuk-tuks became possible, allowing them to be shipped anywhere in the world.
